Posted by on December 27, 2007 4:03 AM

Dear all,
Thanks for the cards and the presents, just thought I’d drop you a line and a couple of photos to tell you about our Christmas.
It’s been absolutely roasting here, 43 on Christmas day and over 44 on Boxing Day; definitely the hottest Christmas we can remember.

Well, for that traditional Christmas sweetheart’s gift a partridge in a pear tree is still indispensable.

An Act of Kindness

Posted by on December 18, 2007 10:58 AM

I thought that I would give Australia a rest this week and tell you instead about a holiday that we took in Newquay 40 years ago. The holiday was nice enough but was memorable to us for the journey home and the kindness shown to us by a Midlands family.

Read on...and on...and on

Posted by The Drama Queens on December 18, 2007 9:05 AM

Sam has quite a few ex-colleagues from her days spent working for Granada TV, one of whom came to visit this weekend. Not only has this particular colleague had a script made into a TV drama, it won the prestigious Dennis Potter Screenwriting Award.
This Little Life is a harrowing story of the birth of a premature baby and the effect it has on a husband and wife and was based on her novel, Between Two Eternities. So when Sam and I arranged to meet for our now weekly scriptwriting morning, I was nervous. Had she shown our raw script to her friend? Did I want her to? What if she hated it?
Worse, what if she didn’t hate it but didn’t particularly like it either?

The Mid Cheshire Community Rail Partnership was founded in 2003 and exists to engage communities in creative development projects in the railway environment along the Mid Cheshire Line (Chester to Manchester via Northwich). The Partnership is funded by several local authorities and railway industry partners. Our aim is to develop perceptions of railway stations as community assets. We have been recognised with national and regional awards for innovation in community engagement projects and have recently won significant funding from Cheshire's Year of the Garden 08 to implement an entire line 'community stations garden project' at the majority of stations on the line.

Chimps have it good

Posted by Trinity Mirror Cheshire on December 11, 2007 10:26 AM

IN memory tests devised by a Japanese professor chimps have beaten humans.
At least I think it was chimps.

Yes, definitely chimps it was, because I recall seeing the picture of a chimp pressing different colour shapes on a screen.

Greyhound Rescue West of England

Posted by Trinity Mirror Cheshire on December 11, 2007 9:39 AM

We are the Cheshire branch of GRWE and have been fundraising for approximately five years. We hold events locally and througout the Cheshire and Staffordshire areas. We have recently added Wirral to our list. We raise awareness and funds to help the charity rescue and rehabilitate abused and abandoned greyhounds. Greyhounds make wonderful pets as they are loving, loyal and gentle. So far this year we have re-homed 100 in this region. We are always looking for volunteers to help us fundraise at events. It's a great way to make new friends, develop a new interest or discover new skills whilst raising money for a worthwhile cause.

Thinking aloud

Posted by The Drama Queens on December 10, 2007 4:13 PM

Sam and I have just had our weekly meeting to discuss the script. We are now aiming to send it to Ric Michael at Baby Cow, even if deep down we know our programme idea is not exactly comedy and consequently not suitable for his production company. But, hey ho, we’ve got to start somewhere and it’s good to have an aim.

Feathers fly at sports snub

Posted by Trinity Mirror Cheshire on December 4, 2007 12:55 PM

While doing her A-levels my daughter was taught that sport was physical exertion that produced adrenaline and made the heart beat faster, bla bla bla.

I told her that was rubbish but she insisted examiners knew better.

What? Yes, she passed, but that does not mean the examiners know what they’re talking about.

Why do girls do better than boys in school?

Posted by Trinity Mirror Cheshire on December 4, 2007 12:49 PM

By Hisham Hamid

In recent years, girls have dominated the GCSE results tables by consistently obtaining higher grades in comparison to boys.

The continuing battle between the sexes in school has led me to ask why are girls beating boys in the classroom? My observations have led to some fascinating discoveries.

Chapter 3. Life's a beach

Posted by on December 4, 2007 11:13 AM

The beautiful Swan River flows into the Indian Ocean at the port of Fremantle, but 12 miles before that the river opens out to form a lake nearly a mile wide, and it is here that the city of Perth sits, surrounding the river as if to protect its most treasured possession. The tree lined St Georges Terrace runs along the north side of the river and is the main business district and heart of Perth.

First draft

Posted by The Drama Queens on December 3, 2007 9:59 AM

Sam and I have completed the first draft of our comedy drama! We’ve got a cast of six main characters; not too many that we don’t have time to flesh them out and not too few to be boring. We want to appeal to as many people as possible, but given that we are forty-something housewives with jobs, kids and husbands, I suppose we’ve narrowed it down to your middle class, dysfunctional, argumentative, modern, happy family viewer, just like us. Even if we never get any further than reading it out loud to each other in Sam’s kitchen we feel we’ve achieved something.
