Why do girls do better than boys in school?

In recent years, girls have dominated the GCSE results tables by consistently obtaining higher grades in comparison to boys.

The continuing battle between the sexes in school has led me to ask why are girls beating boys in the classroom? My observations have led to some fascinating discoveries.

To begin with, girls generally encourage academic success, while unfortunately boys tend to celebrate underachievement as an effective act of rebellion, which ironically leads to ‘respect’ from peers. Much like how an ASBO is seen as a badge of honour to some, a detention is seen in very much the same way. Additionally, boys generally do not make the link between the routine of day-to-day class work and its benefits in the future; they merely cast menial class work as tedious and pointless. Where as, girls triumphantly advance by thinking ahead; realising that education is the most efficient means of ensuring security to last a lifetime.

Rivalry is widespread among adolescent males, competing to attain the most recognition for being exceptional in stereotypically boyish areas like sports and other forms of physicality, which is in stark contrast to studious young girls. Also common, being gratuitously loud in expressing somewhat daft opinions in a futile attempt to be humorous. Efforts, which go wasted on those who snub the occasion as a pathetic attempt to gain attention.

Born perfectionists, Girls take pride in scrupulously preening their physical appearance to perfection, using copious amounts of mascara (as if eye lashes are meant to be two foot long…). Failure to do so leads to fear of no longer being ‘phit, pukka, buff, lush or bum’ and whatever else you can think of. This meticulous behaviour also extends into work ethics; for instance, completing a piece of work to a high standard; a sense of achievement ensues and on the circle goes.

Once more, girls are generally more consistent, establishing routine and discipline - good habits that are carried though into later life. Boys on the other hand, are thrill seeking, ‘non-conformists’, the very thought of a planned, regimented daily routine is utterly deplorable. Come on…Where’s the fun in that?

So the guys reading this at the moment must be feeling pretty hard done by, but this is the startling reality. However, despite all this, why is it that women hardly ever occupy positions of authority?
