The local elections are all about power, Cheshire – and expenses

Posted by Trinity Mirror Cheshire on April 29, 2008 11:35 AM |

Sorry to bother you. If you’ve a few moments to spare I won’t keep you long. I know you’re pushed. Who isn’t these days?

I was wondering if you were intending to vote tomorrow and whether you had made your mind up yet, because I’d like you to vote for me.

Yes, that’s right, in the elections.

We’re in Cheshire East now. A brave new world. Well, a brave new half a county anyway.
Because local government needed modernising. Because it did not fulfil its role efficiently, you see. No it had nothing to do with Brussels.

Well, how would you expect them to ask you personally if it was what you wanted? There was full public consultation. I think. Wasn’t there? I’m sure there would be. They wouldn’t knock something like Cheshire in the head if it wasn’t what people wanted, would they?
Yes, I know they did, but post offices are different.

They have done it this way because it’s cheaper. Leastways the increase in costs won’t be as expensive as the alternatives and that’s a big saving, isn’t it? No, I don’t think leaving things alone was an option.

I represent the Labour Party. We are the Leaner, Greener, Cleaner Party. Here, have a leaflet.
No, you’re wrong there, sir. That’s the Conservative Party you are thinking of. They’re different. I think you’ll find they’re Greener, Cleaner, Leaner.
It’s the Lib Dems that’s Cleaner, Leaner, Greener.

Or is it the Greens. Doesn’t matter, because they don’t stand an earthly anyway, do they? Not that I’m not eco. I’m all for being eco? Got to combat climate change by turning the TV off and all that.
Recycling’s very important, though we’ll still empty your bins, of course and, let me say, we don’t mind if you overfill your wheely, so long as the angle of the lid is no more than 45 degrees. We’ll be issuing each household with a protractor so you can avoid the on-the-spot fines.
Power. You are absolutely right. That’s what it is all about, power. Except we won’t have any power. It will just be a shadow authority for 12 months before taking over. We won’t actually do anything straight away. Well, yes, we’ll be getting our expenses. You can’t expect all us councillors to serve just for the love of it, can you?

No kidding? Did they really? Well, maybe they did once upon a time. We live in a different world now.
