The 53rd Community Pride Competition was celebrated at the Northwich Memorial Hall in the presence of a large gathering of civic leaders, parish councillors, competition judges and enthusiasts who had travelled from all parts of the county.
The overall award for the 2009 BEST KEPT VILLAGE/MARKET TOWN competition was presented to NANTWICH - a market town which is well cared for and attractive to all who visit it.
Mrs. Maureen Walmsley, Chairman of Community Action which organises the competition, presented a plaque and a cheque.
The Cheshire COMMUNITY SPIRIT AWARD was presented to RAINOW who will now be the Cheshire nomination for the CALOR NATIONAL VILLAGE OF THE YEAR COMPETITION, Runner up was Tarporley and Highly Commended were Eaton Village & Rushton, Hankelow and Helsby.
Rainow, set in the Pennines, is a thriving village. It has an active community who all work hard to make their village an attractive place to live.
KINGSLEY won the Community Safety Award, which is sponsored by Cheshire Constabulary.
The Chief Constable of Cheshire, Mr David Whatton, presented a plaque and a cheque for £250.
A New Award has been created this year to support the work of volunteers or individuals who all look after their environment. The Little Gem Award winners were ACTON BRIDGE, ANTROBUS, CHRISTLETON, COMBERBACH, CROWTON, GREAT WARFORD, HALE (Halton), HANKELOW, HATTON, HELSBY, HOUGH & CHORLTON, KELSALL, MARBURY CUM QUOISLEY, MICKLE TRAFFORD, MIDDLEWICH, MOORE, NANTWICH, PRESTBURY, RAINOW, ROWTON, SANDBACH, SIDDINGTON, STYAL, UPTON BY CHESTER, WAVERTON, WINCHAM, WORLESTON & DISTRICT.
Mrs, Walmsley presented the Shell UK Awards in the seven population categories. These were SIDDINGTON, EATON VILLAGE & RUSHTON, PEOVER SUPERIOR, AUDLEM, HELSBY, WISTASTON AND NANTWICH.
She congratulated all those who had entered the Competition and now we look forward to another successful competition next year. Their support for this competition is of great importance and ensures its continued presence in the rural life of Cheshire.
Mr. Jim Grogan AND Mr, John Daines gave a presentation on the work of TARVIN COMMUNITY WOODLAND TRUST.
The competition exemplifies the community spirit in all the villages. It demonstrates and emphasises just how much voluntary work is undertaken to keep Cheshire a beautiful and attractive county. The competition encourages villages to improve every aspect of village life which is under threat in so many different ways.
The volunteer judges come from all over the county and spend considerable time looking at the villages. They all agreed that standards are improving every year.
