Northwich Welsh Society

At the November meeeting members of the Welsh Society thoroughly enjoyed a most interesting talk by Janet Evans on working with children at the RSPB Centre, Lake Vyrnwy in Mid Wales.

Sprinkled with humour and pathos, she spoke about how, as a farmer's wife and former teacher she was recruited by the RSPB, and, subsequently, combined her love of care for the enviroment, and passed on that enthusiasm to visiting parties. especially children from schools in the industrial midlands. Certificates were issued to children who helped with lambing and the milking of goats. Many didn't realise that milk in bottles from the supermarket came from animals. Highlighted also was the two way traffic of gaining the trust of birds and animals. Children even saw robins eat from a hand. She was thanked by the Society's treasurer, Joan Lewis, Castle.

Members will visit the RSPB Centre in the Summer.

On Saturday evening December 12th at a Christmas Concert arranged by the Town Mayor in Witton Church, a Welsh Society member will read a seasonal poem by a former Poet Laureate, then on Monday evening December 14th, the Society will join the members of the Castle Methodist and URC members at the annual Carol Service. A Carol and a Lesson will be in Welsh.

Northwich Welsh Society

The new season got underway in October with the customary quiz. The quizmaster was the former chairman Anthony Masson, who presented his programme in three sections - photgraphs, commercial motifs, and general knowledge. Members were certainly put to a severe test, but an occasional banter helped to make it a fun evening, a most enjoyable one. The winners were Oggie's Quartet.

At the next meeting on Monday 16th November at 7.30pm in the Castle Methodist Schoolroom, Janet Evans from the RSPB will give an audio visual presentation on Working with children at the RSPB Lake Vyrnwy.

In December, members will again join forces with the Methodists and URC for their joint Carol Service.

Anger is a chocolate biscuit

Anger is a chocolate biscuit.
The people, who designed packaging on biscuits, must have twisted minds, or delight in seeing the frustration they have caused to millions of ordinary people, who suddenly develop packaging rage. You finally get them open, and your body aches, and the sweat is pouring off you. No matter how careful you are, the top four biscuits are always broken, then the anger starts again, and you want to write a long letter of complaint to the manufacturer.
Instead of it being a relaxing or even romantic moment, a shared cup of strong tea and a biscuit.
Perhaps anger management courses should be offered with each packet of biscuits.
I wonder how many people have died angry, all because of a packet of chocolate biscuits.

Local History Detective

Over the last six years of researching and writing local history,
I have met and recorded many wonderful local people, including Alzheimer suffers and heart attack victims, in some cases it has given them a new lease of life and much needed companionship,
Some of the people I have worked with have taken up writing for the first time, or even research their own memories now.

I have received many requests for help from people from all over the world, and all walks of life, including helping to reunite three local evacuees after sixty- five years.
A year or so later, I received a letter from a young lady from the midlands for information on a former Runcorn FC player,
Who turned out to be the real father of her dad who was suffering from a rare blood disorder, the information I found out for her helped her through a very difficult time.

I received another letter from a family in Dorset.
The father wrote to me because his son was having a hard time at school and he was trying to get him interested in sport.
The little boy soon took up Rugby in a big way, especially after he discovered his granddad had once played for Runcorn and England.
I was able to send him the whole story, including a rare photo.
He was so thrilled to find out that his granddad had played professionally and is every bit as determined to follow in his footsteps.

My latest request of help is to find out about a former landlord of the Norton Arms pub, his name was Hiam Gilleland.

The Original hobby shop

I was the little boy who stopped on his way to school, to look in the Hobby Shop window, and was told off by teacher for being late. Through the misted up glass I could see lots of model aircraft and airfix models.
I used to go in the Hobby Shop every week with a friend of mine the late Roy Hayes who always seemed to have enough money to buy Dinky or Corgi cars, which were half a crown in old money, I remember him buying the new James Bond car that came out, it fired bullets and had an ejector seat that fired the plastic passenger up in the air. We also looked in Coventry's shop window, at all the model train sets, but we were more into war and motorcars.
Throughout the year I watched all my favorite toys disappear one by one, as other children in the town had birthdays, or Christmas came and went. Tears filled my eyes because I came from a very poor family that couldn't afford toys.
I always wanted an electric racing car set or a fort I'd seen with civil war soldiers and wagons and cannons and red Indians it cost ten shillings in old money, but we could never afford it. My dad gave me some old football coupons and a biro to play with, but it was never the same as having real toys.

Northwich Welsh Society

On what was probably the sunniest evening in July, members had a most enjoyable time at their annual garden party held at the home of their Chairman, Anthony Masson, Knutsford.

Chats in well manicured surroundings were interrupted only by the noise of low flying aircraft. Hostess Christine Masson was presented with a bouquet, and Anthony and her were warmly thanked for their kindness and making their home an open house.

The Society's AGM will be held at the Castle Methodist schoolroom on Monday September 21st at 7.30pm.

A warm welcome awaits new members. Just go along on the night.
