Northwich Welsh Society

Posted by Trinity Mirror Cheshire on December 4, 2009 8:12 AM

At the November meeeting members of the Welsh Society thoroughly enjoyed a most interesting talk by Janet Evans on working with children at the RSPB Centre, Lake Vyrnwy in Mid Wales.

Sprinkled with humour and pathos, she spoke about how, as a farmer's wife and former teacher she was recruited by the RSPB, and, subsequently, combined her love of care for the enviroment, and passed on that enthusiasm to visiting parties. especially children from schools in the industrial midlands. Certificates were issued to children who helped with lambing and the milking of goats. Many didn't realise that milk in bottles from the supermarket came from animals. Highlighted also was the two way traffic of gaining the trust of birds and animals. Children even saw robins eat from a hand. She was thanked by the Society's treasurer, Joan Lewis, Castle.

Members will visit the RSPB Centre in the Summer.

On Saturday evening December 12th at a Christmas Concert arranged by the Town Mayor in Witton Church, a Welsh Society member will read a seasonal poem by a former Poet Laureate, then on Monday evening December 14th, the Society will join the members of the Castle Methodist and URC members at the annual Carol Service. A Carol and a Lesson will be in Welsh.

The new season got underway in October with the customary quiz. The quizmaster was the former chairman Anthony Masson, who presented his programme in three sections - photgraphs, commercial motifs, and general knowledge. Members were certainly put to a severe test, but an occasional banter helped to make it a fun evening, a most enjoyable one. The winners were Oggie's Quartet.

At the next meeting on Monday 16th November at 7.30pm in the Castle Methodist Schoolroom, Janet Evans from the RSPB will give an audio visual presentation on Working with children at the RSPB Lake Vyrnwy.

In December, members will again join forces with the Methodists and URC for their joint Carol Service.

On what was probably the sunniest evening in July, members had a most enjoyable time at their annual garden party held at the home of their Chairman, Anthony Masson, Knutsford.

Chats in well manicured surroundings were interrupted only by the noise of low flying aircraft. Hostess Christine Masson was presented with a bouquet, and Anthony and her were warmly thanked for their kindness and making their home an open house.

The Society's AGM will be held at the Castle Methodist schoolroom on Monday September 21st at 7.30pm.

A warm welcome awaits new members. Just go along on the night.

For the first time in over a decade, members celebrated St David's Day outside the town. This year at the Masonic Hall, Middlewich, even though many members were in France for the rugby international game, there was a good attendance for the traditional leek soup and lamb lunch.

Before the meal, members stood for two minutes silence to remember the late Eileen Owen, Rudheath who did so much for the Society during the lean years in the 80s.
Bilingual grace was said by Joan Lewis of Castle.

Chairman Anthony Masson, Knutsford gave the toast to St David and referred to his many achievements. Of Great Britain's national patron saints, David is the only indigenous one.

The toast to the Society was given by vice chairman Gwili Lewis who touched on past highlights, and his vision of major future activities.

Good attendances at meetings have given the New Year's programme of activities an encouraging start.

In January even though the scheduled speaker was in hospital, members had an enjoyable evening when each person had to draw a topic from a hat, and speak on that theme. It was nostalgic for many, shades of the old penny readings which were popular in chapel youth clubs years ago. It was also a way of encouraging people to speak before an audience. The topics were varied and members of the Society were invited to make comments after each speaker. Subjects included:- If I was President of the USA; The book I'm reading; my hobby; If I was the Prime Minister; My town; When I was a child.. etc.

Cheshire Community Voice

Our aim is to encourage the public serivce users and carers to participate in consultations and public engagement exercises on a variety of issues surrounding our Health and Social Care in Cheshire. We wholly believe that the people of Cheshire are the key to deciding what health and social care services are needed and how these should best be delivered. It is therefore essential that the public are given a say, and most importantly, heard, at every stage of the design, commissioning and delivery process. This allows the public bodies delivering our Health and Social Care services to make better-informed decisions and therefore improve the quality and delivery of these services.
